Vess asked:
Do you think all secular music is wrong? There are the obvious bad music that uses foul language such as curse words and discrimination but what about music that is positive ? Can positive feel good music that does not glorify God really be bad? I was raised christian and I’ve always loved worship music and I think that kind of music will always be beautiful becuase it worshiping the lord but the more contemporary music I’ve never really got into. I have to admit there is a lot of cheesey christian bands and groups that are not good at all. I know they are praising the lord and all and thats all that matters but not all christian music is talented and just because its christian music does not mean you should feel obligated to listen to it. So I guess there is different styles of music for everyone. Going back to my question If I listen to some non-christian music is it really wrong?
When I say wrong I am referring to not having anything to do with Jesus and glorifying him. Clean music without the knowledge of him. This is for the people whio misunderstood my question.

Secular music is ok…
if it is not hateful, insulting, and defying God.
A good moral music is ok. I listen to secular music most of the time…and sometimes, God uses them to reach people too. I always look for God speaking in every secular music or not I just enjoy listening to it and relating.
What is secular music?
all non-christian music is wrong is a very extreme veiw
I agree that there is a different style of music for everyone. When it comes to secular music though, I don’t like listening to some of it because all they talk about is drugs, sex, degrading women as whores, more sex. It’s disgusting. And some of them even curse God with the GD…..
I listen to all kinds of music, rock and roll, country, opera, Christian. I listen to everything from Abba to ZZ Top.
Catholic Christian
That’s one of the good things about being Catholic. We recognize the good in created things, even secular music.
That’s not to say that some secular music isn’t bad or harmful; it is. But a lot of it isn’t, either.
.
When a Christian friend of mine got heavily into church, he threw away his secular music collection–a fortune. He has spent the last two years rebuilding it. Ideally, I think it is better to avoid that which is merely secular. But, it is kind of unrealistic in the world we live in. People are just too worldly.
There’s nothing inherently wrong about secular music. You’re right, some songs may promote a sinful life, and those should be avoided on principle. But a lot of secular music can actually help us see God and the beauty of the world He created for us more clearly.
Everyone’s taste in musical style is different. I happen to go for mostly foreign music (not in English). I also really like some techno (like the kind used in commercials)… I love that song from the caveman geico commercial (everywhere I go… there’s always something to remind me…).
Take for example “Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane. Talk about hitting human relationships on the nail! And at the same time really connecting to the beauty of the earth.
There is some tremendous secular music such as classical music. because even though it is not written with the intention of praising God it is written demonstrating the character of God’s nature such as harmony, peacefulness, joy, etc. Much “Christian Music” on the other han uses the word ‘Jesus” in it, but it is loud, the tones are in disonance, there is screaming and yelling and just disorerly noise. That is no more praise of our God than the blasphemy of the heathen.
Music is music. It’s a form of expression. If you don’t like one kind, switch the dial and find another…
My tastes vary from Amy Grant to WASP and everything in between. Mozart to Olivia Newton John works for me.
Let there be music!
Some secular music is excellent and those who write it have clearly been gifted. Not all music needs to be religious, but hip-hop isn’t music, it’s noise and has no place on the airwaves.
God bless!
As a musician that is Christian, I can say that in many cases, the music is good work. The words, however, often times put out a message that is not good.
Music affects the emotions. Christ said that we should take care of what we hear, and I do believe this would include the words in music.
Modern Christian bands are using the ways of the world to reach those in the world, to attempt to save them from the world…one that is Christian should be moving away from being like the world though.
And I do wonder how many would still be in a band if they could only be heard, no one would know their names, could never record, and could not make money…how many are real?
There IS a huge difference between works like Holy, Holy, Holy, and the modern “Let us Pray,” for instance…decide carefully what you will spend your time hearing.
I stay away from most music these days. The secular music is plastic, sensational, just plain bad. I can honestly say that I’ve only heard a couple of songs from Britney or Christina or any other talentless face.
Christian music is almost as bad. They try make church service spicier by playing new and trendy hymns. One thing I don’t like about my church is that they are always putting new and modern hymns on the Power Point. I miss sharing a hymnal with the person next to me.
